Here’s a secret the opera world has been keeping for over a century: many popular musicals are a lot older than most people think. The Oswego Opera Theater welcomes listeners to learn more about these connections on Saturday, Nov. 7. The “Arias & Encores” show begins at 7 p.m. at the CNY Community Arts Center, 121 Cayuga St., Fulton.
“People think of opera and musical theatre as two separate worlds, but they’re really one long conversation,” said Dan Williams, musical director. “When you hear a Puccini aria and then a song from ‘Rent’ back-to-back, the family resemblance is unmistakable. That’s the fun of this program.”
As “Rent’ is “LaBoème” with a downtown New York City address and a rock score, other musical productions are also connected. “Aida” got an Elton John makeover while “Little Shop of Horrors” has a devilish bargain reminiscent of Faust. “Les Misérables” and “Candide” wrestle with the same big questions that opera has been asking since Monteverdi brought the expressive genre to the masses.
“We want to build an event that welcomes everyone, whether you grew up on cast albums or have never set foot in an opera house,” said Oswego Opera Theater President Gina Mazzoli, herself a featured vocalist in the program. “If you love a good story told through great singing, you’re going to feel right at home.”
A talented roster of local vocalists under Williams’ musical direction will move between Broadway and opera to show how one tradition informs the other. Other featured vocalists include Julia Ebner, Sarah Hasegawa, Erica Hoenig, Sunny Robertson-O’Boyle, Jane Schuessler, and Joe Schuessler.
“This concert is a chance to enjoy a wonderful evening and support live opera in our region,” added Oswego Opera Theater Treasurer Adam Fine, also a featured vocalist. “Every ticket sold really does make a difference for us, keeping opera alive and thriving in our community.”
Williams added, “Bring a friend and a curious ear, you won’t be disappointed with what you hear!”
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at the door and online at https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/cnyartscenter/ariasandencores.
Concessions will be available courtesy of the Art Scene @ CNY Arts Center and a lottery ticket board will be raffled off at the event to benefit the Oswego Opera Theater.
