Perpich Arts High School Music Department Presents: 26/27 Sound Works I

October 12, 2026

Perpich Arts High School’s Music Department kicked off the school year with its first concert on Thursday, October 8th with a repeat performance on Friday, October 9th, showcasing the work students created in small ensembles throughout the quarter. Featuring original compositions and covers, the concert celebrated musical experimentation, collaboration, and the growth that happens when students make music together.

For Sean Healy (Music 2027), his ensemble’s decision to write original music came from a shared challenge: finding a song that everyone wanted to play. “All of our tastes were so separated that it was going to be hard to find a singular song that we all wanted to do,” Healy explained. “So we were just like, ‘why don’t we just take all of our inspiration and tastes and put them into a song that we all want?’”

The creative process also encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones. Healy, a guitarist, took on drums to help his group bring its music together, while other ensemble members contributed riffs, vocals, and ideas.

For Rhys Paulson (Music 2028), the experience highlighted the opportunities available at Perpich. Her ensemble performed two original songs and a cover. “You can really just experiment,” Paulson said. “It’s a really big step up.”

Silas Brodala (Music 2028) described his first concert as both exciting and nerve-wracking, especially as someone still getting comfortable performing onstage. Seeing the progress of other ensembles made the experience even more meaningful. “It’s really awesome to be able to compare where you started to the concert and see how much everybody has progressed,” Brodala said.

As students move into new ensembles for the next quarter, they look forward to meeting new collaborators, exploring different genres, and building their skills. Brodala hopes to experiment with new bass techniques and encourages students to take chances on making music with others.

“Playing music with people is both a very vulnerable experience, but it’s also something that is so unlike any other connection you will ever have,” Brodala said. “Take that opportunity, don’t miss out on it. It’s life changing.”

Congratulations to all the students, and their instructors, on a wonderful performance!
