TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, August 30, 2018 / — Toronto, ON – The fourth annual Festival of International Virtual & Augmented Reality Stories (FIVARS) is set for Sept. 14-16 (the final weekend of TIFF) and will mark the launch of the newly renovated and rescued historic Matador Ballroom where everyone from Johnny Cash to Leonard Cohen has performed over its hundred-year history.

“When I walked in, owner Paul McCaughey, a tai chi master, said, ‘Look what happens when you walk into this space, how it opens up like a Kubrick film,’” recounts FIVARS founder and executive director Keram Malicki- Sánchez, a musician, actor and VR expert. “I said, ‘You’re going to love our festival because it’s about how to tell a story in a space. This medium lets you feel dimension, proximity, and intimacy.”
FIVARS is not your typical film festival. Patrons have a two-hour window to explore the content curated from providers from around the globe: Asia, North & South America, Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Europe. Inside the Matador will be holograms, projection mapping, and multi-user synchronized playback. One can view Virtual Reality experiences from the comfort of a swivel chair, or “room-scale” VR, which allows the user open space to move around and interact within Virtual Worlds.

“It’s a beautiful space designed for visual impact featuring many wonders and curiosities,” says Malicki- Sánchez, fully aware of the Instagram appeal, hence the large lighted FIVARS marquee sign at the entrance.
FIVARS distinguishes itself from other VR events by including dozens of World Premieres, exclusives, and, best of all, no line-ups. Wristbands also allow re-entry each day to the international content creators discussion from 4-5 p.m.

From the 30+ pieces having their world, Canadian, or Toronto premieres, the 2018 VR film line-up includes William, a first-person point of view of a young Indigenous boy’s experience in a residential school by Canadian director Sonia B. Boileau; Second Date, a lighthearted, unscripted portrait of a young couple fumbling towards ecstasy by award-winning erotic filmmaker Jennifer Lyon Bell; Filamu, featuring a pair of African-Americans invited to comment on a documentary about families living in Africa leading to a debate full of authenticity and humour through a visually African but vocally American journey, and an interactive experience that allows you to step inside the mind of one of the coolest teenagers ever with Ferris’s Room.

Not a one trick pony, Mz Jazzie prefers versatility regarding genres of music she chooses to spit bars over. You can’t afford to be too restrictive when dealing with music. So many tracks have a number of different styles included in their arrangements and it pays to keep your options open if you wish to make this thing a career when the market is so competitive.

Sometimes the opportunity to produce a great pop song is often wasted when lyrical content clashes with the musical accompaniment.  Suffice to say, in this case, they make the perfect marriage. The key to crafting a hit record is sometimes is to keep things simple and to allow space to breathe freely within the song. In this case I think all the main parts of the song balance well with each other in a way that is very saleable in the modern market.

Music industry professionals generously provide more than 3,000 hours of volunteer service each year, and collaborative partnerships with hundreds of schools, businesses, and other nonprofits strengthen the organization’s ability to bridge community to industry and serve youth nationwide. Music Forward is doing its part to address a nationwide challenge today’s youth face when it comes to education and employment. 11.7% of the nation’s 16-24-yearolds are disconnected, meaning they are not currently enrolled in school or working which can result in a variety of socio-economic difficulties throughout life. By providing fundamental resources and strategic opportunities, the organization helps youth turn their passion for music into professions and map pathways to success. Music Forward removes barriers to ensure that under-represented voices have a bridge into the music industry and the industry becomes a more accessible, diverse, and equitable place to work.

Music Forward alumna Lirio Hernandez states about her experience, “I grew up in LA and come from a low-income family… I knew that I wanted to do something in music but I was not sure what. When I found out about Music Forward, I was really excited and interested…Music Forward solidified my dreams of going into this industry and made me more confident and determined to pursue my career.”
One of Music Forward’s biggest supporters is Live Nation Entertainment, the world’s leading live entertainment company. Live Nation provides support to the charity through House of Blues revenue streams including Foundation Room member donations, as well as restaurant and retail items designated specifically to benefit the foundation. The company provides access to its venues and professionals for young people across the country to learn first-hand about the music industry. Live Nation also provides the nonprofit with organizational infrastructure which is critical to ensure that the charity invests a majority of every dollar raised directly into programs for disadvantaged youth.

The talent that has been cultivated by Music Forward spans a diverse range of backgrounds and genres. NEW YORK, USA, August 29, 2018 / — The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) today announced Debra L. Lee, Chairman and CEO Emeritus of BET Networks, as the recipient of the 2018 Mickey Leland Humanitarian Achievement Award. Among the highest honors within the industry, this award recognizes individuals and companies representing the media, entertainment and communications industry for their philanthropic achievements and commitment to advancing the concerns of people of color. Lee will be honored as part of the NAMIC Annual Awards Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the New York Marriott Marquis. This year’s luncheon will be held during the 32nd Annual NAMIC Conference presented in partnership with Multichannel News.

NAMIC’s highest honor, the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Achievement Award was established in 1992 to commemorate the eponymous Congressman from Texas for his lifelong advocate in social justice and equality for people around the world.

A long-time supporter of NAMIC, Lee first joined BET Networks in 1986 as VP and General Counsel. She quickly rose through the ranks until she was finally elevated to Chairman and CEO in 2005. Serving at the helm of BET for nearly two decades, Lee’s vision of elevating her community through original and compelling content was the driving force behind the network’s reinvigorated approach to corporate philanthropy and authentic programming. This new approach unlocked doors for black creatives, produced hits like The New Edition Story, Being Mary Jane, BET Honors, led to the network experiencing record-breaking success, and cemented BET as the premier network among black viewers.

Lee is a true change agent whose legacy of elevating black culture will be felt for decades to come. Her achievements have earned numerous accolades from across the industry. She’s graced The Hollywood Reporter’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Entertainment and Billboard’s Power 100 lists, was honored with the Distinguished Leadership Vanguard Award by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. In 2017 the Grammy Organization recognized Lee’s contributions to American music and culture by presenting her with the Salute To Industry Icons Award. Lee is currently the first and only woman to receive the distinguished honor.
A committed philanthropist, Lee serves as President of The Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation and sits on the Board of Trustees for the American Film Institute, Brown University’s Center for Slavery & Justice, The Paley Center for Media, and The USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism.
